The memoirs of Les Hutty, contained in the four pdfs on this page, were kindly sent to the Trust by Tim Langabeer. His uncle, William Langabeer, was captured and sent to Italy as a prisoner. Like Hutty, he ended up at the work camp of Monte Chiaro Denice in the province of Alessandria.
After the Armistice in September 1943, Hutty, Langabeer and two others escaped before the Germans could take over the camp. The account is a graphic description of a long and perilous journey, in an attempt to reach safety, and a tribute to the brave Italian people who sheltered them.
